Johnny Depp is Whitey Bulger in first Black Mass trailer
The first Black Mass trailer has appeared online, starring Johnny Depp as notorious Boston gangster Whitey Bulger. And after years of larger-than-life comedy characters, it looks as though Depp might have finally found a role to stretch himself again.
Set in the ‘70s, the film follows Joel Edgerton’s FBI agent as he persuades Irishman Bulger to turn informer on a mutual enemy of theirs: the Italian mob. However, keeping a handle on Bulger proved to be more difficult than the lawman had ever anticipated…

There’s a strong Goodfellas vibe to this one, with the scene playing out like a riff on Joe Pesci’s famous “Funny how?” routine. That’s no criticism however, and it’s great to see Depp at a level of intensity we haven’t seen from the star in years…
Directed by Scott Cooper with a fantastic supporting cast containing the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson and Peter Sarsgaard, Black Mass will open in the US on 18 September 2015 and the UK on 25 September 2015.
