While Warner Bros. and DC figure out what to do about the Batman solo film that's hit a wall in production, a more feminine fan of flying rodents may swoop in and grab the spotlight. That's right, Barbara Gordon, AKA Batgirl, is reportedly getting her own film which will be helmed by Joss Whedon.
Variety reports that Whedon is in talks to write, direct, and produce the film, though no other producers or names are yet attached. Even so, Whedon is one hell of a get for the DC Extended Universe, as he's largely responsible for the success of Marvel's The Avengers and beloved shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly.
Entertainment Weekly adds that sources say the movie will follow the version of the character set forth by writer Gail Simone as part of the "New 52" initiative that launched in 2011. That run was a bit more serious than the current "Batgirl of Burnside" version that was soft-rebooted in 2014, though both are excellent and colorful and well-written and oh my yes, this sounds like a seriously good step for the DC films.
For what it's worth, Simone seems pretty pumped about the idea:
