Justin Bieber director Jon Chu will direct G.I. Joe 2
He'll take over from Stephen Sommers
Jon Chu, director of Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and Step Up 2: The Streets and Step Up 3D , has been chosen by Paramount to direct G.I. Joe 2 .
Stephen Sommers ( The Mummy ) won't be returning to direct the sequel, but desperate fans can breath a sigh of relief now the follow-up has a director.
Chu is best known for directing Justin Bieber's recent documentary, and he previously helmed the two most recent installments of the Step Up franchise, giving him a tenuous link to Joe star Channing Tatum (who cameoed in Step Up 2 ).
While Chu's name doesn't exactly fill us with confidence that the action sequel will be much of an improvement on the weak first installment, it is worth remembering that Chu does have a knack for choreography, which he might be able to transfer to action sequences.
He also has a script by Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, which can't be a bad thing.
Speaking to Slashfilm, Chu said: "The one thing I felt was missing from the last Joe movie was the power of the punch. You want Joe to be tough. They are fun, but they are tough. I feel that you don’t want to make Joe too kids."
"Joe has history... For me, it is about the fun stuff like Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes, and all the gadgets. All of that stuff. But it has heart."
Now they have their director, Paramount are moving ahead with trying get the original cast members back.
