Layer Cake sequel in the works

Currently working the press circuit in support of his forthcoming comedy Spy, Jason Statham offered a few crumbs of info concerning the sequel to Layer Cake. The 2004 gangster flick, based on the novel by J.J. Connolly, starred Daniel Craig as an unnamed drug pusher (referred to as XXXX) in London. A follow-up has been teased since 2013 with Statham reportedly taking over the lead role, and now it appears it will go before cameras next year.

"JJ Connolly's written a great book called Viva La Madness, and we're taking that book and doing something great with it," Statham told Digital Spy. "He's such a talented writer... the book was incredible. I loved Layer Cake and this is [if anything] better.

"The chance to work with someone of that calibre, do something back home, it's the most exciting thing on my plate... We're doing it next year, and it's full steam ahead. We're putting all the finance together, and we're off and racing."

There’s no word on whether or not Matthew Vaughn, who made his debut on the first film, will be taking up residence in the director’s chair. Nevertheless, with Statham pushing forward on production as well as gathering a steady stream of action hero credits on his resume, we could see Layer Cake 2 in the next couple of years.

Before then you can catch Statham as suave secret agent Rick Ford in Spy when it opens on June 5.
