Leisure Suit Larry gets sequel

Jan 17, 2008

Sleaze maestro Leisure Suit Larry is returning in new adventure Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust, a title that's received with a sly knowing wink. Bust, eh? Get it?

Box Office Bust is set to release later this year on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 (and mobile phone).

We last saw Larry in 2004 in Magna Cum Laude - which didn't exactly set the world on fire - reappearing after several years out of the videogame limelight, but the character's best remembered for the late 1980s adventure In The Land Of The Lounge Lizards.

Sierra's tapped up a new developer - Worms dev Team 17, no less - for Box Office Bust, and the title's exec producer John Melchior has explained that the aim is to bring Larry back in a way that is mass-market, relevant and funny.

To that end, Hollywood is the target. "When we think of off the wall ridiculous missions for Larry to fall into we couldn't beat what Britney, Lindsay and Paris were doing in real life, daily. So then we figured if anyone had it coming it's Hollywood," Melchior tells IGN.

"We are trying to create an American Sex Comedy in the style of American Pie, Superbad and Animal House. A good solid story, clever set ups and great pay-offs with dialogue and gameplay."

So the plot goes: Larry finds summer employment on his uncle's movie lot and gets caught up in attempting to uncover a spy from a rival company who's threatening to reveal all the studio's dirty secrets to the press.

Sierra pipes up with that dreaded phrase "open world sand box game play," and the game features a combination of platforming, racing and puzzle-solving and for some reason a Directors Game that lets you create your own Larry.

But it just wouldn't be Larry without the suit, would it?
