LittleBigPlanet Karting apparently happening. Isn't it about three years too late?

A surprise kart racer entry in the LittleBigPlanet franchise has reportedly been announced at the North American 'PlayStation Destination' event, according to retailer Future Shop Gamer. It will be Move compatible, 3D-enabled and will launch with a steering wheel peripheral for your Move controller.

Of course, we could point out that ModNation Racers already does the 'build anything' idea very well. And that ModNation already has officially-licensed Sackboy DLC. Look:

Above: This isn't LittleBigPlanet Karting - it's the officially-licensed Sackboy DLC for ModNation Racers. You know, the one that's been available for months

Things get especially odd when the rumours suggest ModNation's developer United Front Games is making it. Do we really need two 'create anything' kart racers on PS3?

Also, the timing feels wrong. The idea of turning Sackboy into the Sony mascot to rival Nintendo's Mario or Sega's Sonic looked very likely when the original LittleBigPlanet was released in 2008, but the buzz around Sackboy, much as we love him, is pretty low right now. A Kart Racer spin-off does smack of an 'idea barrel' scrape-a-thon.

The game is rumoured to be a PlayStation 3 game only (not Vita) but when we contacted Sony for confirmation, we were given the usual 'no comment'. We'll keep you updated with news if/when we get it. Until then, squint at this hastily-removed screenshot from Future Shop Gamer. Looks pretty real to us...
