MacGyver is the latest 80s icon remake
The secret agent in the bomber jacket is back…
Even MacGyver’s incredible skills with everyday objects can’t help him avoid his ultimate fate – being sucked into New Line’s remake maw.
Yes, that’s right, after years of rumours, ‘80s action adventure series MacGyver – which made Richard Dean Anderson a mulletted star and the lust object for Patti and Selma on The Simpsons – is getting the big screen treatment.
For those who are too young to remember, or missed out on the awesome power of the Mac, the series saw Anderson’s secret agent heading out on missions for the Phoenix Foundation.
Without fail, he’d get into some scrape or trouble and have to figure a way out, usually by utilising items – from pencils to chewing gum – to escape or foil his enemies’ plans.
Now Raffaella De Laurentiis – Dino’s daughter (he’s on board too) – is looking for a writer and a killer concept that will modernise the story while keeping its pop cultural roots intact.
MacGyver has become such a common concept that it’s entered the language and been spoofed many times.
Will Forte does a great take on the show with the SNL sketches MacGruber, which Anderson recently visited. We’re hoping he gets a cameo in the film.
"We think we're a stick of chewing gum, a paper clip and an A-list writer away from a global franchise," New Line's Richard Brener tells The Hollywood Reporter. Ahahahaaa! Aren’t you funny, with the reference to Mac’s trademark talents?
If you mess this up, we will cut you.
