Martin Scorsese will be honoured by Bafta

Martin Scorsese will be recognised with Bafta’s highest honour, the Academy Fellowship, at next month’s awards ceremony.

Bafta Chair Tim Corrie described the Hugo director as, “a legend in his lifetime,” and, “a true inspiration to all young directors.” Scorsese will collect his award when the Baftas are held at the Royal Opera House on February 12 2012.

“It is a great honour to be recognized by the British Academy,” said Scorsese in an official statement, “and to join the ranks of such an esteemed group of industry colleagues and friends.”

Previous winners of the award include Alfred Hitchcock, Charlie Chaplin, Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick.

Meanwhile, Scorsese has also said he is considering using 3D cameras to film upcoming projects Silence and Sinatra , although he has stressed caution with regards to overusing the technology.

“I had always been interested in 3D, and I thought it made sense for Hugo ,” he told Variety . “Generally, whenever there’s a new technological development, there’s a corresponding sense of excitement.”

“The same thing happened with the introduction of three-strip Technicolor and CinemaScope and Dolby. And then everyone remembers it’s only a means, not an end. Real 3D is beautiful, but it’s just one choice, one tool among many, and you only want to use it if it’s the right tool.”
