Matt Ryan cast as Constantine in new DC show
British actor signs on for small-screen adaptation
DC and Warner Bros. have found their leading man for the forthcoming Constantine TV series, with British actor Matt Ryan signing on to play the title role.
According to the official blurb from Warner, Ryan’s version of the character will be “a working-class Londoner with rakish good looks, scruffy blond hair, deadpan humour and signature trench coat, who has been studying the dark arts since he was a teenager.”
Casting a British actor does bring the character closer to his comic-book roots, although Constantine was originally written as a Liverpudlian rather than a Londoner.
For those not familiar with the Hellblazer comics, Constantine is a kind of occult detective, serving as an unwilling barrier between Earth and the world of the supernatural.
David S. Goyer and Daniel Cerone have collaborated to put together a script, with a pilot episode expected to arrive on US screens later this year...
