For a man worried that the superhero movie genre is almost dead on its back, director Matthew Vaughn sure is cramming them in as fast as he can.
Having helmed last year’s phenomenal Kick-Ass , and currently finishing up work on X-prequel X-Men: First Class , Vaughn is now interested in another superhero project entitled The Golden Age.
Based on an impending comic by Jonathan Ross, Vaughn clearly got word of it through Ross’ wife and Kick-Ass / First Class screenwriter Jane Goldman.
The plot follows a collection of retired superheroes who lend their grandchildren a helping hand when their “middle-aged parents screw up the world”.
So, Red with superpowers, then. And Vaughn is aiming big, with Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson and Warren Beatty on his wishlist for the worn-out heroes.
For his part, Vaughn acknowledges the influence of ‘coming out of retirement’ Red and Expendables , stating: “You have these great star names and they’re mainly playing supporting roles now. I want to give them the lead again and let them have some fun.”
