Meet the Class of 2008

Kaim Argonar | Lost Odyssey | Feb 2008

What's his story?

Well, the backstory is a bit murky to say the least. Argonar is, apparently, immortal. He's lived for a 1000 years, but no matter how hard he rattles the old memory noggin, he can't remember anything. Not a zip. However, as some mysterious magical malevolence starts creeping into the very soil of the world, Kaim must remember his past. So he has to think really, really hard. And, of course, get a party together and fight some big monsters.

What can Kaim Argonar bring to gaming?

As if Japanese RPGs weren't already convoluted enough, Kaim has a 1000 year story to be discovered. According to Microsoft players will "witness Kaim's life as he lives through many generations, becomes part of numerous families, falls in and out of love, and confronts all of the conflicts that arise". We just know that Kaim's twists and turns are going to make Lost's storylines seem like bloody Sesame Street.

Kaim Argonar is the new face of 2008 most likely to...

...leave our brains in a state of plot-disorientated confuselment.

Nero | Devil May Cry 4 | Feb 2008

What's his story?

The loyal member of a cult known as The Order of the Sword, Nero readies his weaponry when the Order's high priest is assassinated by DMC's regular demon slayer, Dante. A cataclysmic showdown between the two - who, as we're sure you've noted, look uncannily similar - ends when the son of Sparda manages to escape. Nero sets out to hunt Dante down and pulverise any creature or big-ass boss that happens to cross his semi-linear path along the way.

What can Nero bring to gaming?

A new face for a fondly loved franchise can often provoke fanboy tears and outrage in equal measure, but having played the entire game we don't think the DMC faithful need to get their pants in a pickle. Indeed, the new moves, combos and abilities Nero brings adds fresh fizz to the formula. Most notably, his Devil Bringer demon arm is righteously awesome when laying the smack down on enemies. After all, big fists equal big fun.

Nero is the new face of 2008 most likely to...

...avoid wanking with his right hand. Just in case.

I don't have the energy to really hate anything properly. Most things I think are OK or inoffensively average. I do love quite a lot of stuff as well, though.
