Mike Figgis gets historical
The director of Leaving Las Vegas and Cold Creek Manor recruits new Bond girl Eva Green for holocaust drama
Never one to shy away from tackling difficult or touchy subjects, helmer Mike Figgis has picked a real heartbreaker for his next outing.
Based on a memoir, The Nazi Officer’s Wife will feature Eva Green – who has just signed up as Casino Royale’s Vesper Lynd – as Edith Hahn Beer, an outspoken law student in Vienna during World War Two. Beer’s story takes a turn for the tragic when the Gestapo force her and her mother into a Jewish ghetto, and spirit Edith away to a labour camp. On her return, she discovers that her mother has been deported. Launching a potentially life-threatening hunt to find her, Edith ends up marrying a Nazi Party member who falls in love with her and agrees to help.
Thomas Kretschmann (King Kong’s Captain Englehorn) and Alexandra Maria Lara are co-starring and the film is planned to shoot in Budapest later this year.
