Hayao Miyazaki’s latest anime epic Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea has passed the 10 million admission mark in Japan just 41 days after release yesterday. This means it’s on track to join three previous Miyazaki movies at the top of the all-time box office blockbusters in Japan. The current all-time box office champ is 2001’s Spirited Away, which took 31 days to hit the 10 million admissions mark. At number two is 2004’s Howl’s Moving Castle (which took 44 days) and number three is 1997’s Princess Mononoke (66 days).
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (which is a literal translation of Gake no ue no Ponyo, and may not be the official title when it’s released in English-speaking countries)is about a goldfish princess who wants to be human.
