New iOS app offers 100 Atari 2600 and arcade games
Relive the '70s on your iPhone
Playing Tempest on your iPhone isn’t quite the same as playing it in an arcade, but Atari’s Greatest Hits for iOS is still exciting for arcade fans. The app itself is free and comes with Pong, and up to 100 additional games can be bought as in-app purchases, either in 99 cent five-game packs, or in one large 100-game pack for $14.99.
Most of the titles are from the Atari 2600, but there are a handful of arcade classics included as well, such as Asteroids, Red Baron, Battlezone, Missile Command, and Lunar Lander. While not every one of the possible 100 titles lives up to the pedigree of these games, most of them are historically significant in some way.
Atari’s sweetened the deal by adding Bluetooth multiplayer to select titles, cabinet art, and scans of game manuals. We haven't tried any of the games, so we can't vouch for the app's overall quality, but hey, you get Pong free. How can you mess up Pong?
