New Pacific Rim featurette explains some of its sci-fi concepts
What’s a neural handshake?
Pacific Rim has released a brand new featurette online, explaining some of the sci-fi concepts involved in the robots vs. monsters smackdown.
The featurette delves deeper into how the giant robots (known as Jaegers) actually work, with human pilots interacting with a computerised control system in a process known as “drift”.
There’s also something referred to as a “neural handshake”, which is when the two pilots merge consciousness, before “drifting” together.
Still with us? Watch the featurette and all will become clear...
What’s immediately apparent is just how sold on the mythology the cast are, with everybody explaining the various Jaeger mechanisms in serious detail. It certainly seems as if Guillermo del Toro has been extremely successful in creating his own sci-fi world, with its own set of rules and internal logic.
Directed by del Toro and co-starring Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Ron Perlman, Pacific Rim will open in the UK on 12 July 2013.
