His Dark Materials is well poised to slot into the Christmas fantasy blockbuster slot once occupied by Lord of the Rings, and judging by the new trailer for The Golden Compass, we’re in for one hell of a ride. Running at nearly three minutes, the promo is positively epic, and provides a titillating glimpse at New Line’s adaptation of the first book in Philip Pullman’s trilogy. Anyone who’s read the books will be pleased to see how faithfully Pullman’s universe has been realised, with the animal daemons and talking polar bears (the heroic Iorek Byrnison now has the dulcet tones of Ian McKellen) a triumph of visual effects to rival anything Middle-earth threw at us. The movie opens in the UK in December, but in the meantime you can watch the clip over at Yahoo Movies .
