No Man's Sky handles player death like Dark Souls

Death is just another part of life for many video games. You fall down a bottomless pit? Respawn and continue. Get fragged by a giant robot? Respawn and continue. But No Man's Sky handles things a little differently, though players of the Dark Souls series and other RPGs may find it familiar.

Basically, when you perish, whether it's in the unfeeling void of space or in the jaws of a massive predator, you lose resources and damage your technology. You'll respawn at an appropriate save point, and have a chance to redeem yourself. Reach the spot where you were killed and you can recover your resources. Die without making it to your own grave and those resources are gone for good.

Two years ago, the official No Man's Sky website read, "One mistake could see you lose everything. In No Man’s Sky, every victory and every defeat is permanent". This lead many to believe the game would have permanent death for players.

Today however, the website reads a bit differently: "One mistake could see you lose everything. In No Man’s Sky, every victory and every defeat has lasting consequences". It's a subtle change, but significant. Bottom line: don't worry about dying in No Man's Sky - just don't die twice.
