A new Oddworld game is coming in 2017, publisher Oddworld Inhabitants has announced. Oddworld: Soulstorm will pick up where Oddworld: New 'N' Tasty (a remake of Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee) left off, with reluctant hero Abe leading his species out of enslavement and into the desert.
Somewhat confusingly, the game sounds like both a new experience as well as an update in the vein of New 'N' Tasty. "Witness Abe's horrifying conflict with a terrifying new machination," reads the game's official website. "A fresh narrative - a complete story retake inspired by our original tale."
Oddworld series creator Lorne Lanning likewise speaks in riddles about the game: "There was a deeper, darker, and more sinister story that we never got to tell," Lanning says in the press release announcing the game. "Soulstorm gives us the opportunity to flesh out more meat on the bones of an original spine, but re-tell the fable from a very different angle."
So is it a completely new story, is it the remake of Abe's Exoddus Lanning talked about last year? Or maybe something in-between? If it is a new tale, it'll be the first since Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, originally released in 2005. Oddworld Inhabitants is slowly revealing details as they gain followers on Twitter, so hopefully we'll know more soon.
