Once Upon A Time Spin-Off Begins To Take Shape
Prison Break’s Zack Estrin and Buffy’s Jane Espenson to lead the writing team
The proposed Once Upon A Time spin-off set in Woderland has taken a few steps towards reality, with writer/producers Zack Estrin ( Prison Break , The River , Zero Hour ) and Jane Espenson ( Buffy The Vampire Slayer , Battlestar Galactica ) being invited to drink from the bottle labelled “WRITE ME”.
Deadline reports that the concept for the series has changed slightly. While the original idea was to use Once‘s Mad Hatter as the key character, that plan has been dropped (presumably partly because of busy actor Sebastian Stan’s unavailability) and the story will now be told through the point of of view of Alice, a character who has never appeared in Once. For now, at least (bet that changes).
New characters will include Amahl, described as exotic, soulful and optimistic, and The Knave, a sardonic adventurer, a man of action, a loner and a heart-breaker. The spinoff will, like Once Upon A Time , feature flashbacks to a pre-curse world.
A pilot for the 13-part series – which wil apparently have a self contained story – is scheduled to begin production on 7 April in Vancouver, immediately following the season wrap on Once Upon A Time .
