Oren Peli exploring Area 51
Paranormal Activity director tackling aliens?
His first film - low-budget chiller Paranormal Activity - is currently haunting cinemas in the States, but Oren Peli is looking to Area 51 for his next project.
Thanks to the sneak success of Paranormal (below), which is enjoying Blair Witch-style attention across the pond and selling out midnight screenings, Peli has found financing and has set a date to start shooting the new movie.
So what is it about? Variety reports that it follows three teens who make an attempt on the mysterious, UFO-related area of Nevada's Nellis Air Force Base known only by its supposed code name.
"I'd rather not say anything about Area 51 except that I am very pleased to be working with the same team who stood by me for the two or three years it took Paranormal Activity to get into theaters," Peli told the trade mag.
Area 51 will use a similar, fictionalised footage method to Activity and will start shooting next week with a $5 million budget. Not bad considering Paranormal Activity cost $11,000...
