Getting your first badge - Kanoko Town to Karakusa Town to Sanyou City
Luckily, getting your first gym badge doesn't really require any Japanese knowledge. Let's get started from where we left off in your room.
Walk up to the present at the bottom of the screen to select your starter, and you'll immediately enter into a battle with your rival who picked the starter you're strong against. Your other rival heals your Pokemon after the battle, and then you enter battle against the Pokemon you're weak to.
More dialogue downstairs. Your mom heals your Pokemon and gives you the Live Caster.
Now you can exit your house and explore Kanoko Town. Go into the house on the bottom left to see a scene with Belle, and then visit the house to the upper left where Cheren and Belle are standing outside. Follow them in and talk with Prof Araragi. She gives you the Isshu Pokedex.
As you exit Araragi's house, your mom will approach and give you the town map.
Head north to exit the town and you'll meet up again with Belle and Cheren. Prof Araragi explains how to capture wild Pokemon and gives you five Poke Balls as a gift.
To Karakusa Town
Time to head to Karakusa Town directly to the north. Head north on Route 1 until you reach the next town, where Araragi is standing outside the Pokemon Center. Talk to her and she gives you a tour of the Center. Heal your Pokemon when prompted in front of the main desk.
Poke Marts now appear within Pokemon Centers. Talk to the guy at the upper end of the counter to buy Poke Balls or Potions. The guy nearest the door sells mail. As usual, as you gain badges the inventory of the Poke Mart will increase.
The upstairs options are unavailable at this point, but once you have your first badge, you can access the Union Room, Wi-Fi and Global Terminal.

A crowd has gathered outside when you exit the Pokemon Center. Talk to Cheren to trigger a scene. After some dialogue, N will introduce himself and challenge you to a battle.
To Sanyou City
Once you're done exploring for the time being, exit Karakusa Townto the NW to enter Route 2 and your mom will approach you with encouraging words, and more importantly, a pair of running shoes.Hold B to use them.
Keep heading north to Sanyou City. Talk to the guy standing outside the gym (NE corner of city), and then visit the school in the NW corner. Talk to Cheren who's standing in front of the blackboard and answer yes (first option) both times to battle him. (Side note: there's also a student in the school who will challenge you to a quiz if you want - choose yes to take the quiz, and then when presented with multiple choice options choose the first option then the third option to wina Full Heal.)
Before you head to the gym, go all the way to the NE corner of the city and head into the forest area. TheNPC to the east will give you one of the elemental monkey trio (Yanappu, Baoppu or Hiyappu)depending on which starter you picked.
Head back to the gym and talk to the guy standing in the doorway. You should be able to enter now and get your first gym badge. Yes!
When you exit the gym victoriously you're automatically whisked away into a buildingdown the street ina quick scene where you receive TM01 - Cut. Once one of your Pokemon learns Cut, you can return to the forest area in the NE corner of the city and proceed into the demolished building area for a fight with Team Plasma.
When you're ready to leave Sanyou City, visit the building below the gym and go to the second floor. Talk to Makomo and she gives you the C-Gear. Her assistant will also give you the Pal Pad after some dialogue. Once you have the C-Gear you're free to exit Sanyou Cityvia the NW exit onto Route 3.
Using the C-Gear
There are three components to the C-Gear - IR, Wireless, and Wi-Fi.
You can turn off the C-Gear by hitting the power button in the lower right-hand corner. It's constantly connected to the Wi-Fi when it's on, so if you want to conserve battery it might be wise to turn it off. It also warns you to turn it off while on airplanes and in hospitals.
Your option on the Wi-Fi menu is Game Sync. You can also now go to your Wi-Fi settings without quitting out of the game. When you connect to the GameSync it will give you an ID code that you can apparently use on http://www.pokemon-gl.com. Looks like this syncs your game with the Dream World online stuff. (The site seems to be down at the moment - we'll update when it's back up.)
Red = Battle
Blue = Trade
Orange = Feeling Check
Green = Friend Code
Green = High Link (you have to be outside to use this)
Orange = Live Caster
To Shippou City and Shippou Gym - Badge 2
After talking to Makomo you can now travel west on the map through Route 3 to Shippou City, where the next gym awaits you. Note: If a man stops you on your way to Route 3 it's because you haven't talked to Makomo yet to get the C Gear.
The Day Care is on Route 3.
Continue west and Cheren challenges you to battle. After, Belle and a child approach because Team Plasma has stolen the kid's Pokemon. Go north after Cheren to a Cave entrance and go inside for a Team Plasma battle. Head back down and talk to Belle and she lets you pass southwest to continue on to Shippou City.
The gym is to the north. This is the first part of the game that might be tricky if you don't speak Japanese. When you enter the gym, you'll get a little tour of the museum section before heading into the gym proper. When you enter the room with the bookshelves:
-Battle the first trainer you encounter when entering the room.
-Go up to the mini-ladder by the bookshelf on the lower left and read the book there (select yes when it prompts you) and then do the same at the bookshelf above it.
-After you read the books on both bookshelves on the left side, approach the trainer by the door at the top and answer yes (first option, as always) to battle her.
-Afterwards, she moves out of the way so you can read the book she was blocking. Read that book, then go to the lower right bookshelf and read the book there too.
-Then talk to the girl next to the upper right bookshelf and answer yes to her question to battle her. After the battle, the girl will move out of the way so you can read the book she was looking at. Once you do, the bookshelf will move and reveal a stairway.
Gym Leader Aloe will be waiting to battle you in the next room. Two badges down, six more to go.
When you exit the gym after earning the Basic Badge, after a scene with Team Plasma, you'll receive the Dowsing Machine from Belle.
Shippou City note: There's a woman in the duplex directly east of the Pokemon Center who will trade your Churine for her Monmen or vice versa depending on which version of the game you have.
To Hiun City and Badge 3
Follow Arty into the forest to the west and battle through all the Team Plasma trainers in the forest to see a scene with Arty and Aloe. Afterwards, Aloe gives you a Moon Stone.
Hiun City
Items of interest in Hiun City:
-There's a guy in the area directly south of where you walk in from Sky Arrow Bridge that will give you a Water Stone, Fire Stone or Leaf Stone for whichever monkey you want to evolve. When prompted to choose, the options are in order: Yanappu (Grass), Baoppu (Fire), Hiyappu (Water).
-Down the street with the Pokemon Center in the corner, the building on the left has a woman in the lobby that will give your Pokemon a massage.
-On the street north of the fountain plaza in the building to the left, the name rater is in the lobby sitting by himself to the right.
-There's a guy in the art gallery who will give you a berry of your choice if you show him a Pokemon of the type he asks for.

When you approach the gym (on the westernmost street in the city), Cheren and Arty will both exit and talk to you. Follow Arty south and then go east and south again to cue another scene. Go back in the direction of the gym to cue another scene with Arty, and then follow him again down the street for another scene with Arty and Team Plasma. After the battle, follow everyone into the building for yet another scene. Time to go get the Beetle Badge!
