Pokemusings, week nine

Property Plays - This is a subsection of puns, but it's worth highlighting these kinds of names as their own. Egg Pokemon like Happiny, Chansey, andBlisseywill be perfectly happy with a name like Scrambelle. If we're feeling a bit lazy or uncreative, we go with obvious names that reflect the physical, elemental, or type properties a Pokemon has. Swampert fans will notice that this Pokemon has a large fin on his head, so naming one Finhead is entirely acceptable.

Pop-Culture References - Using your favorite actors, movie characters, and book characters is a fine way to name your Pokemon. We're particularly fond of calling our male ghost Pokemon Boo Radley. If that's a bit obvious for you then we recommend using obscure movie reference. For example, we've named more than a few of our Miltanks Mooby, after the fictitious fast-food chain in Kevin Smith's movies. We named our Hoot-Hoot Pigwidgeon, after Ron Weasley's owl in the Harry Potter books. This lets us show that we're just as fanatical about Harry Potter as we are Pokemon! Using pop-culture references is not only a way to flex your pun-making muscles, it'll also reveal how many trivial details you retain from your favorite movies, books, songs, etc.

Foreign Languages - Naming Pokemon is also an excellent way to show off your multilingual capabilities. Using other languages (preferably in a pun-making fashion) helps your Pokemon have a unique name that'll impress other trainers and provide a good way to start a conversation. People will want to know what your Golem is named Shitou and you can intelligently reply that the name means "rock head" in Chinese. Although it's a bit naughtier, we like to name out Psyducks and Golducks "Dahkling." This is Thai for "monkey butt."
