So after what seems like forever, we are now finally, finally ready to take down Fantina in the Hearthome Gym! Though she may not look it, Fantina’s actually a master of the undead, and both her and her gym lackeys carry almost exclusively Ghost-type pokemon. Ghost types fall prey quite easily to Dark attacks, so bring a few Dark types along. Ghost pokemon are also vulnerable to their own Ghost-type attacks, but if you pit two Ghosts against each other, it could turn into a bloodbath (ectoplasmbath?) pretty quick. Some pokemon can use Ghost attacks like Astonish even though they aren’t Ghosts themselves, so they’re a good choice for your roster as well. Keep in mind that Normal-type pokemon are also completely immune to Ghost attacks. If you caught Girafarig earlier, this is a perfect place to unleash its wrath. It can use Dark and Ghost skills, and it’s a dual Normal/Psychic type. While Psychics are usually weak to Ghost-type skills, Girafarig’s Normal type completely makes up for that weakness by nullifying Ghost damage.

The thing is, you might not even need a superpowered army here, because the Hearthome Gym is one of few where you don’t necessarily have to fight any trainers before you take on the Gym Leader. If you do opt to battle them, you’ll get some extra EXP and money, but you can go through the entire Gym up to the end without a battle. All you need to do is answer some simple math questions. If you answer correctly, you proceed. If you answer incorrectly, you wind up in a battle.

For the benefit of those of you too lazy to open up Calculator, we’ll even give you the solutions. Enjoy!

For the first question, the answer is “15.” (right door)
For the second question, the answer is “40.” (center door)
For the third question, the answer is “39.” (left door)
For the final question, the answer is “15.” (right door)

Once you reach the end, it’s time to deflate Fantina’s ego!

Ground, Fighting, and Normal attacks are utterly worthless in this fight, so leave them at the door. Instead, focus on utilizing as many Dark and Ghost attacks as you can. Her Drifblim is a tank, with a whole balloon-load of HP and an ability that deals your pokemon damage whenever the thing gets hit with a physical attack. If you have any special Dark- or Ghost- based skills, make use of those. Otherwise, you’re probably just going to have to eat a bit of additional damage to take it down. Gengar’s not too tough – it’s fast, but it’s not so hot in the defense department. The real one to watch out for is Mismagius. It has an extremely high Special Attack stat, which can allow it to put some serious hurting on your pokemon. It’s also got access to some Psychic skills, which can induce confusion in your critter. The key here is simply to hit fast, hit hard, and hit often. If you can do that, it won’t be too much trouble at all.

Congratulations, you’ve got your fifth Gym Badge! You’ve also got the Surf HM now. Awesome! We could use it to swim over to the next gym in Canalave… but why do that when we can get some previously unobtainable and hidden items first?

You can also get to the Ironworks now, which is covered in the Sidequests section. Be sure to drop by the Poketch company in Jubilife again, too, for a new Poketch application.

Okay, now we’re ready for Canalave. Maybe.
