Robert Downey Jr cast as Iron Man!
He's slipping on the super-suit for Marvel
In a quirky, yet strangely perfect piece of casting, Iron Man director Jon Favreau has picked Kiss Kiss Bang Bang star Robert Downey Jr to fill out Tony Stark’s power suit for his superhero adventure.
Favreau will start shooting the movie in February – and has to meet a May 2008 release date – so it’s good news that he’s found his man. Marvel’s Kevin Feige gushed about the casting to Variety , explaining the choice by likening Downey Jr to Tobey Maguire having never starred as a superhero before: "It's right along the lines of our other films, where we cast people who can become the characters.”
So Downey will be playing Stark, an uber-wealthy industrialist who invents the high-tech suit after he’s kidnapped. The armour gives him superpowers, which he uses to fight villains such as boffin type The Mandarin. That sound you hear is the gnashing of Joss Whedon’s teeth – we hear he really wanted Downey Jr as Wonder Woman. Yeah – now you can’t get that image out of your head, our work here is done.
