Saoirse Ronan testing for Cinderella
Favourite to star opposite Cate Blanchett
Mark Romanek’s Cinderella is beginning to narrow the search for its slipper-shod heroine, with Saoirse Ronan thought to be the frontrunner to play the Disney princess.
Cate Blanchett was recently cast as Cinders’ Evil Stepmother , and Ronan is currently under consideration for the title role. It would represent something of a happy ending for Ronan, who had previously been in line to play Snow White, only for The Order Of The Seven to hit the scrapheap.
However, she faces competition in the form of Anna Karenina star Alicia Vikander, as well as Gabriella Wilde, both of whom are thought to be prominent in the studio’s thoughts. Perhaps they should use the old slipper test to make their choice?
The film will work from a script from Chris Weitz, which follows a young Prince who finds himself press-ganged into a politically beneficial marriage. However, a chance encounter with the lovely Cinderella convinces him that true love is possible after all.
Directed by Mark Romanek, the film is expected to begin shooting in the new year, with a release date yet to be confirmed.
