Universal has released the first official pics from director Edgar (Shaun Of The Dead) Wright’s comic book adaptation, Scott Pilgrim Versus The World. And they certainly seem to capture their comic book origins.
The film is based on six graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley about Slacker musician Scott Pilgrim’s battles against the seven evil ex-boyfriends his true love, Romona V Flowers. This is Edgar Wright’s first major film not to star Simon Pegg and he’s promising something very different: “There have been lots of great comic book adaptations recently, but I thought there was a good way – Post Sin City and 300 – to bring an elements of graphics an animation to the screen in a comedy film that you wouldn’t accept in something harder like The Dark Knight. There’s also a videogame element that’s in the book. It seems to me you can do a good videogame film that isn’t an adaptation of any game.”
The film is an adaptation of all six Scott Pilgrim books, even though the final two hadn’t even been published when shooting began: “On the one hand it’s very faithful to the books, on the other, it has become something that has the structure of a romantic comedy.”
The film stars Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrm), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Romana V Flowers), Kieran Culkin (Wallace Wells) and is released in the UK on 6 August. Click on the images for larger versions.
