Secrets of the Pokemasters
Raising Pokemon can be hard work, but we've got some advice to help you conquer Sinnoh in no time
My sweet honey
After dealing with Team Galactic lackeys in Floraroma Town, you'll be given a jar of Honey as a reward. You'll also be able to purchase more bottles from the same man for 100 pokedollars each. Honey is useful for one thing and one thing only: attracting rare pokemon you can't obtain otherwise.
To set honey traps, look for gold-colored pine-looking trees. Walk up to them and press A to spread honey on them. The pokes won't come for the honey right away - it'll take a couple hours at least. In the meantime, you can go do other things. Just don't take too long, since the pokes that get stuck in honey will eventually break free.
When you come back to check on your honey traps, look to see if the trees you slathered in sticky goop are shaking slightly. If they are moving, that means a pokemon has been caught, and you can walk up to the tree and press A to initiate a battle. If it's not shaking, nothing has been caught yet, so you'll need to wait a little while longer.
There are many pokemon that can only be caught by using honey: Heracross, Aipom, Combee, Cherubi, Burmy, and the much-loved Munchlax. One particular poke to look out for is a female Combee. Female Combees are pretty rare - they're outnumbered by males by 8 to 1. They're also the only sex capable of evolving into the fearsome Vespiquen, a Bug/Flying type with some unique and powerful abilities. If you chance upon a combee of the fairer sex, make sure to capture her by all means necessary. Even if you don't plan to evolve her, she will serve as great trade fodder on the GTS. Burmy's another interesting catch with gender-based evolutions: males will become Mothims, and females can evolve into one of three Wormadam forms. With so much variety in the pokes you can catch, you'll want to make use of Honey as much as possible.
