And more bootleg "demakes" that put a retro twist on your favorite games
Download Super Maria Cosmos for a bite-sized tribute to Super Mario Galaxies. Use your stylus to direct Maria’s movements and the spacebar to make her jump. You’ll need to navigate your way through the game’s topsy-turvy worlds to grab the key that unlocks the door the next stage.
S.T.A.C.K.E.R. takes the post-apocalyptic premise of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and turns it into a creative block puzzle. The falling blocks and UI look great, and closely match the distinct look of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.’s inventory screen. But this isn’t a simple skin for a Tetris clone.
Forming lines helps you progress further into the Wasteland, but blocks that represent weapons, armor, items, and monsters also add a bit of RPG flair to the mix. Monster blocks eat away at your health so keeping a gun is a handy way to reduce their drop rate. Saving other objects like armor will also help prevent radiation sickness, but if you hoard too many items you’ll also fail once the screen fills up. Unlike most of the entries we saw in this competition, S.T.A.C.K.E.R. goes beyond the expected visual puns and delivers a solid game.
Above: Will you form a line and give up your assault rifle? Or will you save it to prevent death by wild dogs later? You’ll only have a few seconds to choose
Above: An empty town. Lots of fog. And creepy flesh thingies scraping their bodies against the pavement makes Soundless Mountain II feel like a true blue NES version of Silent Hill 2
Can a NES game scare the pants off you? No. Of course it can’t. That would be ridiculous. But Soundless Mountain II captures the eerie atmosphere of Silent Hill 2 and just might scare the shoes off you. Okay. So it probably won’t do that either. But the game’s genuinely creepy and is the most technically impressive demake we’ve seen in the competition.

Yes, Gang Garrison II has online multiplayer (which is sweet) and S.T.A.C.K.E.R. is a ton of fun. But Soundless Mountain II is the only entry we can see ourselves playing like a real game. The fog effects are nice. The city is designed with care with lots of buildings and alleyways to explore. The screeching blasts from your radio will make you squirm. And there are plenty of squishy flesh things to weird you out. Do yourself a favor, and make sure to check this one out.
