SFX Spurious Awards Of The Week

Doctor Who Muppets, Battlestar wedding, an alternate DC relaunch ad and loads more vital fluff and nonsense

TARDIS OF THE WEEK

Although we were slightly disappointed to discover that this week’s Horizon – “The Core” – didn’t involve sending Professor Brian Cox to the centre of the Earth in Thunderbird’s Mole so that he could point at a geode and go, “Amazing!”, we were stunned to learn that NASA scientists have created their own TARDIS in Maryland. And talking of TARDISes…

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY HOMAGE OF THE WEEK

You’re not likely to witness a sweeter transition shot than this any time soon…
.

LOST ELVES AND HOBBITS OF THE WEEK

It wasn’t so much Haven this week as the Grey Havens, as a bunch of Elves and Hobbits who’d apparently missed the last boat decided to swim instead. There was even a Enya wannabe wailing in the soundtrack.
.

WORST MADONNA IMPRESSION OF THE WEEK

Alpha’s Hicks is not sure about his new Jean Paul Gaultier-designed superhero costume with pointy corset.
.

WORST VULCAN SALUTE OF THE WEEK

We don’t reckon True Blood ’s Marnie has long left to live or prosper…
.

NEW JOHN BARROWMAN-HOSTED GAMESHOW OF THE WEEK

It appears to be a blend of Blockbusters and Twister .
.

ALTERNATIVE DC RELAUNCH AD OF THE WEEK

MUPPETS MASH-UP OF THE WEEK

Okay, the Muppets mash-up meme is getting a little passé now. And technically this isn’t from the past week but is two months old. But we missed it when it first came out, and now we’ve been alerted to its presence, it would be criminal not to share. Because it’s brilliant.
.

UNEXPECTED SF TWIST OF THE WEEK

The latest in the Driver series of games, Driver San Francisco is out today. “What’s that got to do with SFX ?” we hear you cry. Well, in a moment of inspiration/madness the developers Ubisoft Reflections have given the latest in the formerly straight-laced cops ’n’ robbers racing series an ingenious SF twist. It’s all gone Life On Mars , y’see, with the main character, Tanner, in a coma and able to “shift” between different bodies and cars. What next, teleporting in Gran Turismo ?
.

WEDDING PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Fans recreate famous publicity image at wedding. As posted on the Battlestar Galactica Facebook page .
.

BEST USE FOR POST-ITS OF THE WEEK

Check out the window designs created by French office workers from the contents of the stationery cupboard.
.

MOST UNCOMFORTABLE LOOKING SPECTACLES OF THE WEEK

If you thought 3D specs at the cinema were a pain, wait till you try strapping this to your face. It’s a new Sony headset games console which was originally announced earlier this year when the accompanying artist’s impression didn’t make it look quite so clunky. Now it looks like some craft out of a ’60s Gerry Anderson show. Anybody else reminded of those hover board things from Stingray ? Despite the aesthetic changes Sony assures us in its press release that the console retains the same “spec”s. Ho ho ho.
.

BITE-SIZED DOCUMENTARY OF THE WEEK

Steampunk: it’s not a genre, it’s a lifestyle choice. It’s great to have a documentary like this that isn’t condescending, but this is almost too cool to take seriously. And we’re not sure what the ’70s lift music in the background has to do with steampunk.

.

MONOPOLY BOARD OF THE WEEK

PinkAxolotl on Deviant Art made this for her Fallout -loving boyfriend. He’d better watch out. A girl like that is going to very popular round these parts.
.

ESSENTIAL ITEM OF THE WEEK

As spotted by a boingboing poster – an antique vampire-killing kit on show at an antiques show last weekend. It boasts a pistol, a stake, garlic, holy water (presumably not past its sell-by date), mirror, bible, silver bullets and crucifixes. Fancy it? Yours for $900 from Best of France Antiques in Buckingham, Pennsylvania. We hear a certain Mr Giles is showing an interest.
.

REMAKE OF THE WEEK (NSFW)

Captain Planet returns in the form of Don Cheadle… but he’s not quite as PC as we recall.
