Skyfall scores record-breaking opening weekend
Takes $77 million one week before US release
Bond is back with a bang, as Skyfall enjoyed a richly profitable weekend, with a couple of broken records thrown in for good measure.
The film opened to the tune $32.4m in the UK this weekend, the second highest opening weekend in history behind Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows .
It also broke the highest ever attendance record for a Saturday in the UK, as hordes of 007 fans flocked to the cinema to catch it as soon as possible.
The film enjoyed similar success overseas, racking up an overall take of $77m across all territories. Expect that to spike significantly when Skyfall hits US shores on 9 November 2012.
Sam Mendes has previously said that he’s unsure whether he’ll return to direct another Bond film, but with numbers like these, we’re not sure MGM will let him leave...
And The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Skyfall screenwriter John Logan will return to script an original two-part follow-up, not based on any Fleming stories. With Bond freshly revitalised, colour us excited.
