Sony is to discontinue online services for multiplayer-only titles SOCOM Confrontation and MAG, as well as SOCOM 4, early next year. Released in 2008, 2010 and 2011 respectively, one can only assume that the online-focused PS3 shooters have relatively small active player counts, although publisher Sony provided no explanation when it announced the news on Twitter.
Advisory: Online multiplayer services for MAG, SOCOM Confrontation, and SOCOM 4 will be ending on 01/28/14July 16, 2013
SOCOM Confrontation was developed by Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City maker Slant Six Games, which downsized earlier this year after transitioning from console development to the mobile and free-to-play market. MAG and SOCOM 4 were developed by Zipper Interactive, which was shut down by Sony in June 2012 following the completion of Vita shooter Unit 13. At the time, the platform holder said the closure of the 18-year-old studio was “a result of a normal cycle of resource re-alignment within Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios”.
