Star Wars' Rian Johnson says The Last Jedi is (SPOILERS), but there's "wiggle room"

Ever since its title was revealed, fans have been curious just who the last Jedi in Star Wars: The Last Jedi is. Cast and crew have been tight-lipped about the upcoming film, but director Rian Johnson was surprisingly candid in a recent interview with the New York Times, telling them exactly who the last Jedi is.

IN CASE THIS WAS NOT AS OBVIOUS AS A MUPPET IN A SWAMP, THERE ARE SPOILERS AHEAD - DO NOT READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHO THE LAST JEDI IS

"It’s in the opening crawl of The Force Awakens. Luke Skywalker, right now, is the last Jedi," Johnson said. "Coming into our story, he is the actual last of the Jedi." And it's true. Here's the text from Star Wars: The Force Awakens (emphasis mine):

Luke Skywalker has vanished. In his absence, the sinister FIRST ORDER has risen from the ashes of the Empire and will not rest until Skywalker, the last Jedi, has been destroyed.

Of course, that would be far too straightforward of an answer for a series that emphasizes mysticism and the connection to an all-powerful "Force." So Johnson added the caveat that, while Luke may be the Last Jedi as things currently stand, "there’s always wiggle room in these movies - everything is from a certain point of view."

Hm... remind you of anyone?

Actually, make that anyones:

That line about "wiggle room" makes sense given that non-English versions of the title have it referring to multiple final Jedi.

As for Luke, his own feelings toward the Jedi may not be particularly fond. As Johnson told the Times, "[The line 'It's time for the Jedi to end'] sounds pretty dire. That’s something that we’re definitely going to dig into. The heart of the movie is Luke and Rey. It follows all the other characters, but its real essence is the development of the two of them. And it’s absolutely tied up in that question of, 'What is Luke’s attitude toward the Jedi?'"

I don't know about you, but I'm excited to find out.
