Magic: The Gathering has been steamrolling its way into different franchises with a fury that'd put the X-Men's Juggernaut to shame, and now MTG Spider-Man is here for a teamup. Because this move combines one of the world's biggest franchises with one of its best card games, I fear a pop-culture black hole has been created to hoover up all our money.
But what does this superhero-Magic combo look like? Is it based on the Avengers films? How does it work? And is it a full set? To answer all these pressing questions (and a few others besides), I've combined my decades of comic-book knowledge with a Magic: The Gathering obsession to create this guide. You'll find everything you need to know about the MTG Spider-Man crossover here, including when it'll come out and which mechanics it uses.

MTG Spider-Man essential info
- It's a 'Universes Beyond' crossover set
- This set is purely focused on Spider-Man characters
- It's Standard-legal
MTG Spider-Man is a Magic: The Gathering set based on the Marvel comics universe. More specifically, the friendly neighbourhood part starring Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and more.
This set is part of the game's 'Universes Beyond' label. If that name doesn't ring a bell, it's the publisher's title for any crossovers that aren't part of its 'main' Magic series.
This isn't a one-off that was fired out and forgotten, though. While we're moving on from Spidey's neck of the woods, another set titled 'Marvel Super Heroes' will focus on the wider Avengers universe as of June 2026.
Is MTG Spider-Man Standard-legal?
Yes, Magic: The Gathering's main Spider-Man set is Standard-legal. That means you can use most cards from it in your normal, run-of-the-mill Standard matches. In addition, you can use the cards from Play and Collector Boosters in Draft and Sealed matches.
It's a little more complicated where the Welcome Decks are concerned. These are labelled under MTG Spider-Man Eternal-legal, so can only be used in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage games.
Is MTG Spider-Man based on the MCU?
Sorry, MCU fans; MTG Spider-Man is not based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It takes inspiration from the comics instead.
However, that isn't to say it ignores the silver-screen heroes. Many of the set's designs are inspired by the MCU, so it should be familiar to those who've only watched the movies.
What was the MTG Spider-Man release date?
Magic: The Gathering's Spider-Man crossover is out now, and you can grab its full product lineup as we speak.
As per usual with MTG, the release schedule wasn't necessarily straightforward. That's especially true because the MTG Arena version didn't actually use the Spider-Man characters or branding, opting for an entirely original makeover instead. Here's how it all shook out.
- Prerelease: September 19-25, 2025
- MTG Arena release: September 23, 2025
- Tabletop release: September 26, 2025

As a full, red-blooded Magic release, MTG Spider-Man arrives on a tidal-wave of products. Boosters, Bundles, Scene Boxes, precon decks... it's all here. To help you form a plan of action in terms of what you want to prioritize, here's what's swinging our way.

Play Boosters | View at Amazon
As with most sets these days, MTG Spider-Man includes the usual single Play Boosters and Play Booster Boxes. Each individual Booster features 14 cards, and the Booster Boxes include 30 MTG Spider-Man Play Boosters.
Collector Boosters | View at Amazon
Launching alongside the standard Play Boosters are these more expensive, premium Collector alternatives. You can get them solo (each with 15 special, hard-to-find cards) or in a Collector Booster Box that features 12 packs overall.
Bundles

If you'd like the best possible start to your MTG Spider-Man collection, this is probably the product to get. It features 9 Play Boosters, 30 Land cards, a die, and a themed box you can store it all in.

This special combo-pack features 9 Play Boosters, 1 Collector Booster, a themed die, a storage box, and 30 Land cards alongside a unique, retro design based on Spidey's first appearance.
Other
Scene Box | View at Amazon
Like other Universes Beyond releases, MTG Spider-Man includes a special art-focused box set in its lineup. This one has full art and normal MTG cards that make up a singular scene, this time featuring Spidey and many of the Sinister Six.
Welcome Decks | Check for stock at Amazon
Rather than your usual Commander decks, MTG Spider-Man offers something different; Welcome Decks. These are headlined by a notable member of the Spider-fam and focus on a different mana type each. These can be hard to come by, unfortunately.
Prerelease | View at Amazon
The final kind of product for MTG Spider-Man is just as hard to find; it's the Prerelease pack, which, as the name would suggest, was largely sold as part of the prerelease events. This one included numerous booster packs and a themed die.
MTG Spider-Man mechanics
- Web-slinging and Mayhem introduced
- Connive returns
- Double-sided cards are back again
Because of Spidey's unique abilities, the folks over at Wizards of the Coast have had a lot of fun designing new mechanics for the set. Yes, older ideas make a return in MTG Spider-Man, but the most eye-catching systems are all new.
Weekly digests, tales from the communities you love, and more
Here's a full breakdown of what we're looking at:
- Web-slinging: This is an alternative cost to casting a spell, and it usually saves you some mana (handy!) while returning a creature card to its owner's hand.
- Mayhem: Because Spider-Man's villains are some of the best in the business, it's only right that they get cool new gameplay features as well. This ability allows you to cast a card from your graveyard if you discarded it on the same turn.
- Double-sided cards: Secret identities are a huge part of Spider-Man's world, so it's no surprise to see cards that 'transform' (e.g. flip over to their other side) back in this set.
- Modified: There's an emphasis on giving your cards benefits via gadgets or items in this set. Basically, you get something for providing your heroes with snazzy gear, just like Peter's many inventions.
- Connive: Here's a returning mechanic that fits rather well with MTG Spider-Man's many bad guys. This lets you draw and discard a card, potentially providing bonuses if it's a non-land that you've gotten rid of.
