TGS 2011: Final Fantasy Theatrhythm footage dances to the beat

Man, Square-Enix sure does like making Final Fantasy spin-offs more than they like making Final Fantasy games. Today, they released a new trailer for Final Fantasy Theatrhythm, the 3DS rhythm game that will have players tapping, sliding, and slashing their 3DS’s screen to 50 Final Fantasy songs instead of fighting monsters and questing in a giant world with an epic, memorable story. Take a look!

The trailer definitely hits the right notes (pun intended) for pulling at the heartstrings (no pun intended) of Final Fantasy fans. The music-based gameplay overlays footage from classic games, including early 16-bit Final Fantasy adventures as well as cinematics from the more recent entries, but for as misty-eyed as we get watching Squall dance around, we’re even more excited by the sections which appear to be entirely new. Watching adorable characters battle even more adorable enemies while the player taps and slashes at their screen seems utterly delightful, and we can’t wait to take it for a spin. While this definitely isn’t for everyone, gamers with a Cloud poster on their wall and an iPod full of Final Fantasy music will likely find this to be just the thing they need to justify charging their 3DS.
