To celebrate the release of Studio Ghibli ’s latest animation From Up On Poppy Hill we’re having a rummage through the Spirited Away studio’s magical history
S is for Spirited Away
Already touched upon in the Oscars section, Spirited Away is arguably the title which woke the western world up to the full potential and accessibility of Ghibli’s animations. When a family stumbles upon a derelict town the mother, father and daughter unwittingly enter an alternate reality where spirits and monsters roam. When her parents are turned into pigs, young girl Chihiro is forced to work a bathhouse to find a way to free herself and her parents and escape to the human world. Showing the strongest element’s of what makes Ghibli’s worlds so magical, Spirited Away has arguably set the benchmark to which all Ghibli films will be forever measured.
