The Bourne Legacy tops the US box office

The Bourne Legacy opened to decent numbers in the US this weekend, even if it couldn’t quite top Supremacy and Ultimatum .

The $40.3m that Legacy pocketed will be seen as a solid opening (it was enough to knock The Dark Knight Rises off the top spot), although it’ll be interesting to see how it holds up over the next couple of weeks.

Matt Damon-starring sequels The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum took $52m and $69m respectively, so Renner shouldn’t be too disappointed with his haul.

TDKR was actually bumped to third place, by The Campaign ’s $27m opening. That’s a pretty decent number considering the political theme (reviews have been on the favourable side of mixed which could have provided a boost, but Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis were the real draw). TDKR added another $19.5m to its total, taking it to $390m in the States.

The final new entry in the top 10 was sex-therapy comedy Hope Springs , bagging $15.6m. Starring Meryl Streep and playing to the sometimes overlooked ‘mature’ crowd, this one could have legs.

Elsewhere, Total Recall had the biggest drop-off, percentage-wise, shedding 68.3% to collect $8.1m.

Here’s the full top 10:

1. The Bourne Legacy ($40.3m)
2. The Campaign ($27.4m)
3. The Dark Knight Rises ($19.5m)
4. Hope Springs ($15.6m)
5. Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Dog Days ($8.2m)
6. Total Recall ($8.1m)
7. Ice Age 4: Continental Drift ($6.8m)
8. Ted ($3.3m)
9. Step Up 4: Miami Heat ($2.9m)
= 10. The Watch ($2.2m)
= 10. The Amazing Spider-Man ($2.2m)
