The Bourne series will continue to follow Aaron Cross
Matt Damon's return still a possibility
The Bourne Legacy hits UK screens in around one month's time, but Jeremy Renner and producer Frank Marshall have been looking a little further down the track, revealing a few snippets about where the series could go next.
A fifth film seems very much on the cards, barring a box-office disaster next month, with Marshall hinting that Aaron Cross (Renner's character in the new film) could be the man to carry the franchise through several more instalments.
"We're gonna follow Jeremy's character," Marshall confirmed at an official press conference for the new film. "Everything else is wide open. That's the great thing about this now. The table is set to go any direction we want to. But we will, I'm sure, follow Jeremy and see what happens. Jeremy and Rachel [ Weisz ]."
As the new film takes place in tandem with the events of the original triliogy, there has been a suggestion that Matt Damon could yet return for another outing, with Aaron Cross's journey set to make frequent references to that of Jason Bourne.
It's a possibility that excites Renner as much as it does the fans. "As far as the future," began the star, "I'm excited that the architects and the creators behind this whole thing have cleverly left it wide open for fans like myself to wonder what's going to go on next."
Directed by Tony Gilroy and co-starring Ed Norton, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Albert Finney, The Bourne Legacy opens in the UK on 13 August 2012.
