US TV network The CW (home of Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries ) has ordered two new sci-fi romance series, The Selection and Joey Dakota, according to The Hollywood Reporter .
The Selection , based on a series of books by Kiera Cass (left), is described as an epic romance set 300 years in the future about a poor young woman who’s chosen by lottery to participate in a competition to become the next queen of a war-torn nation at a crossroads (hmmm, getting in on some The Hunger Games action are we, CW?). The show is being developed by Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain, whose credits include The Vampire Diaries , Dollhouse and The Secret Circle … but to be fair, they jumped shipped from The Secret Circle very early in the show’s development over “creative differences” so we can’t really blame them for it.
Joey Dakota is apparently a romantic-time travel musical (hmmm, getting in on some Glee action are we, CW?) which features a documentary filmmaker who travels back in time to the 1990s where she meets and falls in love with the rock star she was making a film about. But then she’s cruelly propelled back to the modern day, in the knowledge that he‘s going to die. How can she travel back in time again and prevent his death?
Joey Dakota is being written by Easy A ’s Bert Royal and is based on the Israeli format Danny Hollywood (see below… but no, we have no idea what’s going on…)
