The Roommate stalks to top of the box office
Followed closely by Sanctum
College stalker film The Roommate snuck to the top of the US box office this weekend with an impressive haul of $15.6m.
Which is pretty remarkable considering its biggest star is the one who can act in Gossip Girl (Leighton Meester), and it’s not exactly had a massive marketing campaign.
James Cameron especially must be licking his wounds this morning, his new 3D extravaganza Sanctum having failed to beat the stalking drama.
Instead, Sanctum plumbed for second place with an underwhelming $9.2m, displacing No Strings Attached to third ($8.4m), The King’s Speech to fourth ($8.3m) and The Green Hornet to fifth ($6.1m).
Last week’s number one, Anthony Hopkins exorcism film The Rite , tumbled to sixth with $5.6m, while The Stath's action redo The Mechanic slumped from third to seventh ($5.3m).
The Coen brothers’ Oscar contender True Grit debunked to eighth ($4.7m), The Dilemma to ninth ($3.4m) and Black Swan continued to twirl prettily in tenth ($3.4m).
