It's official: Top Gun is coming back to theaters with Top Gun 2, tentatively titled "Top Gun: Maverick". Jerry Bruckheimer, who will produce the film, tweeted that the sequel will be directed by Joseph Kosinski and will debut in theaters on July 12, 2019.
Excited to make it official. Joe Kosinski is on board to direct. And Top Gun is coming to theaters July 12, 2019. #TopGun #Maverick pic.twitter.com/pu6RKSVKJOJuly 1, 2017
Kosinski doesn't have many films to his name, but you've probably heard of the ones he has done: Tron: Legacy and Oblivion are standouts, but did you know he also directed several trailers for Destiny? The movie will star Tom Cruise (because let's be honest, who else was gonna carry this thing), and is written by Peter Craig (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, The Town) and Justin Marks (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, The Jungle Book).
Now comes the real challenge: resisting the urge to break out into Kenny Loggins every time this movie gets mentioned for the next two years.
