Tron Legacy lightcycles into box office top spot
Cyber-sequel takes $43m
Tron Legacy powered up for a decent number one box office opening this weekend, bowing to the ker-ching of $43m.
Which isn’t a massive opening for a big studio tentpole, especially one lavished with as much media attention as Legacy has been.
Still, it may snowball (ahem, Avatar ). And we can at least take solace in the fact that Legacy stopped the abominable Yogi Bear getting to number one – thank heavens for small mercies. Instead, the CG bear settled for second place with $16m, just ahead of Narnia ’s third place ($12m).
The Fighter surged from 19th place to fourth in its second week of release (hello and thank you favourable reviews), while The Tourist went from second to fifth ($8.7m).
Disney’s Tangled , meanwhile, got wrapped up in sixth ($8.6m), Black Swan pranced about in seventh ($8.3m) and the annoyingly question-markless How Do You Know debuted in eighth ($7.6).
Rounding out the top ten, Harry Potter enjoyed a fifth week in the charts ($4.6m), while Unstoppable continued to prove just that in tenth ($1.8m).
