Ubisoft greenlights Clancy MMO
Acquisition of all rights to Tom Clancy name paves way for new development opportunity
Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot has revealed the publisher's now set to "go for" an MMO branded with the Tom Clancy name.
Guillemot's comment follows the news that Ubisoft has now acquired all rights to the author's name, which frees it up from royalty charges.
"Having no fees, it's going to give us a full return, [so] we've really decided now to go for an MMO on the Clancy name, which is big", Guillemot said during a conference call.
Estimating that an MMO would cost Ubisoft between $40 and $50 million to bring to market, he added that the company already "has the technology to create MMOs... We have lots of games in the Clancy franchise that are already multiplayer. So to create an MMO, we need to have larger teams to actually spend the time to create it."
Ubisoft's UK arm could shed no further light on Tom Clancy MMO plans when contacted this morning. So for now it's a case of watch this space.
