“Gfinity would like to clarify that it has not sought to confirm Microsoft sales figures. The comments in the statement today is based on a variety of independent sources published earlier this year.”
ORIGINAL STORY: Esports company Gfinty seems to have finally given us a hard number on how many Xbox Ones Microsoft has sold and that number is 18 million, quite a bit less than Sony's 35.9 mill. Almost half in fact.
The figure comes from Gfinity's CEO, Neville Upton, in a press release about bringing its Tournament Builder app to the Xbox. In it, he states the new app will be able to "reach Xbox One's 18 million users globally".
The figure ties in with a previous slip in January where EA said there were 55 million consoles in circulation - taking away Sony’s 35 and change will get you around 19 million consoles that aren’t a PS4. Assuming some of those are Wii U’s then we're back at about 18 million again.
It certainly explains why Xbox’s Phil Spencer is so keen to talk about engagement as a metric for success rather than actual sales. That’s two number slips that suggest Sony has a 2-1 lead on Microsoft at this point.
