Battlestations: Midway

Battlestations: Midway has been around for quite a while, starting life as a game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox consoles. But now it's hitting the big time on the PC.

Before you roll your eyes at the thought of another WWII game (the most played-out game setting on Earth, next to the mean gangsta-ridden streets of Big City, USA), know that Battlestations is a bit different. Rather than a simple first-person shooter or squad-based first-person shooter, Battlestations is a strategy/action hybrid that tasks you with manning the controls of roughly 60 various ships, subs and weaponry as you fight to turn the tide in the Battle of the Pacific.

Basically, any vehicle in your fleet can be commandeered at any time. You jump behind the wheel, so to speak, and take part in the actual battles. You'll pilot ships to the last-known coordinates of enemy submarines and drop depth charges in an attempt to flush them out. You'll guide your own subs in the process of punching torpedo holes in enemy cruisers, or pilot smaller vehicles as you try to support your larger allies. Or take control of the deck guns on a battleship and attempt to shoot down incoming Japanese Zeroes during the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. You can also take to the skies yourself - some 25 of the unit types at your command will be planes.
