Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade
We go to the experts to elevate our game
GR: Do you have any funny experiments that paid off, or come-from-behind miracle stories that you'd like to share with us?
Tim: When I first joined the team, Sky Ray Missile Carriers were considered useless by everyone on the balance team. Therefore, the unit was buffed up pretty heavily, but even after that, no one used them because of their bad first impressions with it. So one day, I was playing as Tau vs. Stefan's Space Marines on Fallen City. I lost all my troops, lost all my listening points all over the map, and my base was half destroyed. I thought "Oh well, might as well test out the Sky Ray Missile Carrier". I killed his army that was attacking my headquarters with 1 Sky Ray, and by the time I got my 2nd and 3rd Sky Rays, his whole army/base was destroyed. Of course the Sky Rays were rebalanced, but it was a fun experience, and we still talk about that game from time to time.
Josh: Such experiments and stories are quite prevalent in Dark Crusade. Typical late-game comebacks are very possible when players are committed to winning. I find that a player will be willing to run his workers away at the start of the game, but later on laziness sets in and small things don't seem to matter. If you're able to do the small things, it can be the difference of your actions that determine the flow of the game, not the difference in momentum. Never give up!
