Remaking Crash Team Racing is all about capturing the feeling of those original tracks we raced around close to 20 years ago now. Whether it's Crash Cove, Polar Pass, or Slide Coliseum, the remastered version of the game has to stay true to some very fond memories that we all have.
Thankfully, developer Beenox is well aware of this responsibility and as you’ll see in our video, they’ve done an incredible job. Each track has had its classic layout maintained, shortcuts and all, but the visual redesigns are a sight to behold.

But as well as being faithful to the original game, the team has also been keen to add some new features to Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. For a start, the game now has kart customisation. As you play you’ll be unlocking access to all sorts of different options ranging from the kart designs themselves to the wheels, paint jobs, decals and stickers you’ll use to decorate them. No two karts should ever look the same.
There’s a tonne of characters to unlock as you play through the game’s Adventure Mode, or by spending Wumpa Coins at the Pit Stop, with each one having a range of different skins to choose between. We mention this in the video we’ve included alongside this article, but it’s worth saying again here: Polar can now wear a raincoat and a tiny yellow hat. Do you actually need to know any more than that?
When you’re racing against your friends in split-screen and manage to make it onto the podium, you’ll now be able to select a victory dance to celebrate your glorious achievement. This is very important as it allows you to really rub it in the face of whoever placed second, which is what this genre is really all about.
There are also more ways to beat your friends than ever too, with all your favourite tracks from Crash Nitro Kart having been recreated here as well. Add Battle Modes to the mix and that should keep you plenty busy next time you sit down to play together.
But if you can’t meet up in-person quite as easily as you’d like to, fear not! The original Crash Team Racing may not have included online multiplayer, but Nitro-Fueled absolutely does. With support for up to eight players, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to show off that raincoat and hat you’ve obviously unlocked for Polar!
