Five years after its big reveal, The Witness has a release date

The next game from the creator of Braid finally has a release date: The Witness will start puzzling players on PC and PS4 on January 26, 2016. The date was revealed in a lovely new trailer that explores the game's island and its many, many line puzzles.

Seriously, this game is really into connecting dots. But it looks like those circuitboard-style puzzles are just the top layer of the island's many mysteries.

Here's a quick timeline to give you some idea of how significant The Witness finally getting a release date really is: Braid came out in August 2008, and Blow started working on The Witness later that year. It was originally planned for release in 2011, and it even had a quiet public debut at PAX Prime 2010. Then it showed up at the PS4 reveal event in February 2013 as a console exclusive.

It's been the Forrest Gump of video games for the better part of a decade now, popping up in the background of significant events in gaming history. Kind of weird to think it's actually going to come out in January.
