Zelda: Phantom Hourglass revealed

Nintendo has delighted DS gamers by announcing that a new Zelda game - The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - will be appearing on the portable pocket filler later this year, and you can see the first trailer for it right now by clicking the movies tab at the top of this very page.

The latest addition to the Zelda family was unveiled at the Game Developers Conference in California and, despite Nintendo not offering attendees much information regarding the game, the trailer certainly gives the legions of loyal Zelda disciples plenty to get excited about.

Phantom Hourglass seems to be a direct descendant of the last Link adventure - The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker - adopting the same distinct and deliciously vibrant graphical style. Glimpses of a boat steaming across a bright blue ocean are also reminiscent of time spent - sometimes laboriously - sailing Wind Waker's seas.

The touch-screen looks as though it will be fully exploited, with the brief trailer demonstrating several possible uses - opening dungeon doors, planning a nautical route between islands, scripting the path of Link's boomerang and marking points of reference on dungeon maps.

Nintendo has promised that Phantom Hourglass will be playable at this year's E3, so expect more information in May.
